Timothy E. Gates was appointed as Deputy Chief Counsel to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections in June 2011. In this capacity, Mr. Gates supervises a team of attorneys who represent the Department in civil rights litigation. In addition, he serves as a member of the Governor’s Office of General Counsel’s Appellate, Litigation and Technology Practice Groups.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Gates served as a Deputy Attorney General with the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. As a Deputy Attorney General, Mr. Gates was assigned to the Health Care Section where he prosecuted violations of the consumer protection law and other laws enforced by the Attorney General.
Mr. Gates is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, as well as the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Pennsylvania. Mr. Gates received his Bachelor of Arts in International Politics from the Pennsylvania State University and his law degree from the Widener University School of Law.
Prior to his legal career Mr. Gates was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army.
