Purpose
Pennsylvania Heritage is a popularly-styled and liberally illustrated magazine published by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) and the Pennsylvania Heritage Society. The quarterly is intended to introduce readers to Pennsylvania's rich culture and historic legacy, to educate and sensitize them to the value of preserving that legacy, and to entertain and involve them in such a way as to ensure that Pennsylvania's past has a future.
Content
Pennsylvania Heritage strives to convey a sense of Pennsylvania and to connect its past with what the Keystone State is today or what it is likely to become. The magazine seeks articles relating to the Commonwealth's history and culture, which are intended for intelligent lay readers. Articles on such varied topics as architecture, fine and decorative arts, oral history, science, travel, historic sites, industry and technology, natural history, and archaeology, as well as state and local history, all are suitable.
Submissions must be written with an eye toward illustration and, when possible, should be accompanied by photographs, maps, drawings, and related materials. Photographic or pictorial essays are also welcomed.
Style
Writing style should be popular, readable, and entertaining, but without fictionalization and extensive quotation (except in the case of oral history). Manuscripts must be concise, thoroughly researched and documented, well organized and accurate. Articles accepted will be edited according to guidelines recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style, Sixteenth Edition (2010). Submissions to Pennsylvania Heritage should follow those guidelines.
Manuscript Requirements
Manuscripts range from 2000 to 3500 words maximum. They must be double-spaced in easily readable type. They must be submitted either by disc or as an e-mail attachment in Microsoft Word. Either format must be supplemented by a hard copy. Manuscripts should be accompanied by a suggested title, a list of six to twelve books for suggested further reading, credits or acknowledgements, and a brief biographical sketch of the author. Footnotes are not required, but a list of sources for fact-checking is requested.
Although queries, proposals, and outlines will be evaluated, the editorial staff prefers to review completed manuscripts.
Photographs and/or other illustrative material, such as line art or drawings, should be submitted with manuscripts for review.
Payment and Rights
The Pennsylvania Heritage Society, in concert with the PHMC, will pay authors upon acceptance of an article. Payments range between $250 and $500, depending on the complexity and amount of research and interpretation necessary to make this article engaging, entertaining and, most important, educational and informative.
Pennsylvania Heritage purchases one-time, first rights for print and all electronic rights for publishing articles, in whole or in part, on its website, as well as any and all websites administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Pennsylvania Heritage Society, their heirs or assignees.
Each author will also receive six complimentary copies upon publication.
