The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) receives regular requests for use of images of historical markers.  Because markers are the registered trademark of PHMC and the text is copyright protected, an individual or group is required to obtain written permission from the Commission to use its trademark and copyrighted material.

PHMC generally grants permission for use of marker images for illustrative or educational purposes.  The image may not be used for commercial for-profit purposes.  PHMC requires that the marker not be used in any manner that could be deemed embarrassing, detrimental, or disparaging to PHMC or in any manner that explicitly or implicitly implies involvement of PHMC.  PHMC also requires submission of a copy of the final publication or link to the website that uses a marker image for our records.
