The Pennsylvania Statewide Immunization Information System (PA-SIIS) is a statewide immunization registry that collects vaccination history information. The PA-SIIS was developed to achieve complete and timely immunization records for all people and is managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. It captures immunization records from health care providers and stores this information in one central location. If a patient receives immunizations from more than one health care provider, the PA-SIIS consolidates the immunization information from all providers to create a complete and current record.
Participation in PA-SIIS is voluntary. Some groups of health care professionals (i.e. pediatricians) do an outstanding job of reporting immunizations to the SIIS. Immunizing pharmacists, on the other hand, are not doing very well. At the time of the writing of this article, there are about 6,000 pharmacists licensed by the Commonwealth who have the authority to administer injectable medications, biologicals and immunizations. There are only 35 pharmacies participating in PA-SIIS.
Reporting immunizations to the PA-SIIS is easy. With this web-based tool, all you need is a computer with internet access. Entering a new patient on the system takes a couple of minutes. For returning patients, reporting an immunization is a matter of searching the database and then seven clicks of a mouse. There are also tools within the PA-SIIS which can help you manage your vaccine inventory.
The Department of Health will provide, at no cost to you, on-site training for you and your staff, and ongoing technical support. For more information about PA-SIIS and how to enroll as a provider, please visit www.health.state.pa.us/pasiis or call (877)774-4748.
