  • Keystone State Games is an amateur athletic competition patterned after the Olympic program, promoting physical fitness and sports activity as a strategy to improve health and prevent disease for all Pennsylvanians.
  • Registration totals from 2005 for the Keystone State Summer and Winter Games totaled 9,700 individuals.
Keystone State Games Initiatives:

Keystone Athletes Mentoring Pennsylvanians (KAMP) www.keystonegames.com
  • KAMP began in October 1998 and is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health in partnership with the Keystone State Games, Inc. in Luzerne and Cambria Counties.
  • The KAMP Program goal is to increase physical activity among elementary children in 4th through 6 th grades. Keystone State Games scholastic athletes interface with elementary students in order to stimulate and motivate them to participate in more physical activity and the importance of living healthy lifestyles.
  • KAMP works with school districts and community organizations in Luzerne County to promote healthy lifestyles with physical activity to students. Examples of partnering organizations are Commission of Economic Opportunities; Wilkes-Barre Recreation Board, Ice Skating Association, Swim Program, and Health Department; Luzerne County’s Anti-Tobacco Program; and Department of Health Northeast District Office.
  • KAMP program has expanded from three to seven elementary schools and now provides physical fitness activities to approximately 6,454 elementary students.
  • Activities such as roller and ice-skating, skiing, snow tubing, nature walking tours, hiking, bicycling, karate, and swimming. Athletic clinics are provided for baseball, basketball, bowling, wrestling, soccer, and track and field.   
 Pennsylvania Senior Games  
  • The Department of Health promotes the Senior Games as an avenue for athletes age 50 and older to compete in over twenty sports. Every other year is a qualifying year for the National Senior Games.
  • Registration totals for the Pennsylvania Senior Games in 2005 were 684 individuals.

  • A five month (Feb - June) Statewide program that encourages increased physical activity and healthy eating habits through friendly team competition.
  • In 2005, 1,546 teams accumulated over 1.7 million hours of physical activity and lost over 21,900 pounds.
  • PA challenge - youth component of Shape Up PA, focusing on increasing physical activity levels.
