- If any employee has a medical or fire emergency, contact the Capitol Police at 1-911 from a Commonwealth phone, will not work with cell phones.(voice/TDD).
- The Capitol Police utilize an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to save lives.
- For your safety, do not leave briefcases, handbags, back packs or other items unattended. Keep your wallet or purse with you or locked in a secure drawer or cabinet. Do not leave credit cards, checks or money on your desk where it is highly visible.

- Become familiar with your building evacuation plan.
- Use stairwells when being evacuated.
- Do not use cell phones during an emergency evacuation
- Become familiar with your buildings surroundings.
- Office coffee funds, etc. should be locked in a secure drawer or cabinet.
- Do not bring valuable personal items into the office.
- When you are away from your desk, advise appropriate staff of your absence, and if possible, lock your office door to protect valuable equipment from theft.
- Before going home at the end of a workday, secure items such as lap top computers in a drawer or cabinet. Turn-off electrical appliances such as coffee pots. Lock all doors.
- When a repairperson arrives in your office to work on equipment, ask for company identification.
- When going to and from parking lots/garages, walk with a group or utilize the buddy system.
- Have your car keys ready for immediate entry into your vehicle.
- Keep your vehicle locked while it is parked and while you are driving.
- Do not keep packages, etc. visible while your car is parked.
- Always notify someone that you will be working late and give them a phone number where you can be reached.
- Always be observant when walking to your vehicle. If you fear for your safety, turn around and go back to a phone and call for help.
- The Capitol Police will provide an escort to your vehicle after normal work hours by calling them at 787-3199 (voice/TDD) at least one half hour before you are ready to depart your work site.
- Don't panic when you see the K-9 Unit is in your building. The K-9 Unit makes routine patrols throughout the Capitol Complex and outlying buildings to insure the safety of those that it protects. Their presence does not necessarily mean that there is a bomb scare.
- The dogs are friendly, however, do not attempt to pet, feed, and gesture or call the dogs. They are working dogs and should not be distracted.
- While the K-9 handler is more than happy to answer questions about the dog, please do not distract the handler when he is "working" the dog.
