A 21 year-old college student has admitted to being the mid-west mailbox bomber in 2002. These motion-activated pipe bombs injured 6 residents and were discovered in 6 other mailboxes in 5 midwestern states. Helder admitted to building 24 bombs before he was apprehended. His intention was to get attention by booby-trapping mailboxes in a smiley face pattern across the Midwest U.S. Obviously a troubled individual, Helder’s anger seemed to be a strange mix of anti-government, environmental, and hard rock oriented beliefs.
