Labor Demonstration Safety & Security Support
PA-STARNet provided video support for monitoring of organized demonstrations in Hershey on September 23, 2011. A camera mounted on a State Police helicopter transmitted real-time video of demonstration sites to a command post through a mobile tower for coordination of response to any incidents. Pennsylvania State Police and Derry Township Police Department officials reported that the operation was completely successful, attributing much of that success to intelligence from the video feed.

Shanksville Flight 93 Memorial
PA-STARNet provided communications support for the Flight 93 10th anniversary ceremonies in Shanksville in September 2011. A mobile tower was available for air-to-ground video. State agencies deployed for security and coordination of these high-profile events used the network successfully for voice communications, including Pennsylvania State Police support for dignitary motorcades as well as reporting of helicopter surveillance to the U.S. Secret Service.

2011 Hurricane & Flood Response
PA-STARNet served as the backbone of communications support for response to Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in August and September 2011. The network provided emergency managers and responders with the statewide flow of information in real time, allowed for coordination among county emergency operations centers, and supplied operations support for swift water rescue teams. In the storms’ aftermath, damage assessment relied on portable radios using PA-STARNet with a mobile tower in areas experiencing telephone service outages.
