Appearance/Dress Questions

  • My employer can't order me to shave my beard/ cut my hair/ remove my earring/ wear a skirt, etc, can they?

Yes, but it may be unlawful if your employer does not enforce the policy equally on the basis of your race, color, sex, age, religion, ancestry, national origin or non-job related disability, or if the policy affects people of one race, color, sex, age, religion, ancestry, national origin or non-job related disability more than others. If you file a complaint, the Commission will decide if your specific case is unlawful.

  • My religion requires that I wear a veil/mezuza/kufi/cross

My religion requires that I wear a veil/mezuza/kufi/cross, but my employer says it violates the uniform dress (separation of church and state) policy and I will be fired if I continue to wear my religious garb/symbol. Is this true?

It may be unlawful to forbid you to wear religious attire or to fire you because you do.
