Rebuilding Pennsylvania Promises Made, Promises Kept |
State Government Reform: Protecting Taxpayer Dollars
Governor Corbett is committed to changing the culture of Harrisburg and, as a first step in that direction, introduced a reform plan his first week in office. From reducing the state vehicle fleet to pledging to reduce the cost of state government by 10% in four years, Governor Corbett is devoted to being a good steward of taxpayer dollars. The Governor signed a 2011-2012 state budget that focuses on cutting spending, like eliminating WAMs and legislative slush funds with little or no oversight, instead of raising the taxes of hardworking Pennsylvanians.
Returning state government to its core functions is the first step in protecting our taxpayer investment. A key example is the Pennsylvania State Liquor Store system. The Governor has convened a panel to look at the impact of selling this system back to the private sector and removing the state and taxpayers from the business of selling alcohol. He successfully negotiated contracts with Pennsylvania’s two largest state employee unions that save taxpayers $415 million. And most recently he supported the appointment of a top level employee in the Inspector General’s office to specifically focus on eliminating fraud and waste in the Department of Public Welfare, ensuring that those who receive benefits, quality for them.
