Safe Schools Targeted Grants

The Department of Education is pleased to announce the completion of the grant review process for the Safe Schools Office’s Target Grant proposal for 2011-12 and the awarding of 39 grant awards totaling $500,000.00

The purpose of the Safe Schools Targeted Grants is to assist school entities by providing funding for programs under their comprehensive safe school plans, which include the planning and implementation of activities that prevent or reduce violence by and against youth on school property and/or transportation to and from school.  Funds must be used in accordance with the criteria identified in Act 26 of 1995; as amended the Safe Schools Act, and fulfill the requirements of the guidelines set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) as indicated in this request for application (RFA).

In response to the Request for Application (RFA), 180 grant applications requesting more than $ $2,371,185.00 were read and scored by a team of four readers.  The total scores were rank ordered from highest to lowest and grants were recommended for funding until available funds were exhausted.

The goals of the PDE Safe Schools targeted grant are:

1)      To assist schools in reducing unnecessary student disciplinary actions and promote a climate of greater productivity, safety and learning.

2)      To assist schools in the professional development of staff in research-based violence prevention programs and classroom management programs.

3)      To assist schools in enhancing antiviolence efforts between schools, professional, parental, governmental, law enforcement and community organizations and associations.

The following eligible programs will be considered for funding:

·         Conflict resolution or dispute management including Restorative Justice Strategies.

·         School-wide Positive Behavior Support.

·         School-based diversion programs.

·         Classroom management.

·         Research-based violence prevention programs that address risk factors to reduce incidents of problem behaviors among students.

·         Training for Student Assistance Program team members.
