SWVC Reading With Elders

Southwestern Veterans’ Center Intergenerational Reading Program was initiated in the fall of 2004. Our Intergenerational Reading Program goals are to enhance the quality of life of all participants, improve attitudes toward the elderly, share life experiences and to meet specific school mission requirements of the students of Transfiguration School. The program allows for our Veterans’ to actively listen to stories read by the students in a one-on-one or small group setting, providing the students’ with enhanced self- esteem and an opportunity to enhance their reading skills. During this process the Residents and students develop a positive relationship, adding another benefit to the program.

Reading with the Elders Award Recipients
An awards ceremony at Transfiguration School recognizes both the students and SWVC Residents participating in this program. This ceremony includes lunch with our Veterans and a distribution of Certificates of Accomplishment and medals to all participants in this program.

SWVC Resident Recycling Program

Residents at the Southwestern Veterans’ Center have helped make a difference to our environment by initiating a recycling program with the assistance of the Activities Department.

Our Residents began recycling by strategically locating recycling cans throughout our facility in the fall of 2005 and to date have recycled 1085 pounds of aluminum cans that have generated $695.55 in profit.  The profits generated fund a monthly Resident recycling project bingo for the Residents of Southwestern Veterans’ Center.

This ongoing recycling project provides a sense of responsibility to the Residents involved and has helped to make everyone in the facility more aware of the environment.  The Residents take pride in this project and look forward to the trip to the recycling plant every couple of months.
