SWVC Therapeutic Activities
Our Therapeutic Activities Services Department is designed to enhance the overall quality of everyday life for the Southwestern Veterans Center Resident. Our Therapeutic
Activities Department operates 7 days a week offering a diverse range of activities while encouraging residents to function independently and at their highest level. Knowledge of each resident is obtained during the admission process via the Therapeutic Activities Assessment and the Resident Interest Survey. The Assessment and Survey as well as ongoing input from our residents and information obtained from monthly Resident Council Meetings are all effective tools utilized to develop specific activities and programs for each resident as part of their total plan of care.
Activities are conducted in a wide variety of settings throughout our facility to include: The multi-purpose room for large group activities and special events, the chapel courtyard, the outdoor pavilion, the dementia unit courtyard, the library, the activities room and the unit dining areas and unit lounge areas for unit-based activity programs.
Annually our Activities Department Staff who are all CDL licensed take our 2 buses and residents on the following trips: Gateway Clipper Fleet Boat Ride sponsored by Sharing and Caring, Inc., 2 trips to PNC Park to watch Pittsburgh Pirates baseball, Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp, 3 fishing trips to Deer Lakes Park sponsored by the DAV, 2 trips to view the Eckerd Celebration of Lights at Hartwood Acres and trips to various veterans group posts, legions, and lodges for specialty meals and bingos throughout the year.
Weekly activities include: card club, pokeno, ceramics class, exercise group, unit- based activities and religious services.

The Activities Department initiated a voluntary recycling program in which residents gather cans from recycling receptacles placed strategically throughout the facility that are later recycled at our local recycling plant. This has been a very successful and lucrative program that provides an additional bingo to our residents each month known as the “Resident Recycle Bingo.”
The Activities Department at Southwestern Veterans Center continually adapts to the needs and interests of our veterans. Our team of recreational professionals is committed to creating new and lasting memories for our veterans via diverse therapeutic activities programs, special events and community outings.
