The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) is pleased to announce that Pennsylvania received the “meets requirement” determination this year for Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) from the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).
Pennsylvania is one of only 14 states to receive this determination this year and last year was one of only nine states to achieve this status. The USDE began issuing state determinations in 2007.
PDE congratulates and recognizes our school districts, charter schools and the Bureau of Special Education for their hard work in delivering high quality services to students with disabilities. Without the dedication of the individuals serving our students we could not meet these high national standards on such a consistent basis.
The IDEA, as amended in 2004, requires the U.S. Secretary of Education to make an annual determination as to whether each state is meeting the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The IDEA statute and Regulations detail four categories for the Secretary’s determination of a state’s status, including: (1) Meets the requirements and purposes of the IDEA, (2) Needs assistance in implementing the requirements of the IDEA, (3) Needs intervention in implementing the requirements of the IDEA, or (4) Needs substantial intervention in implementing the requirements of the IDEA.
