Description: Mary Hamilton, author of Rising from the Wilderness: J.W Gitt and his Legendary Newspaper, The Gazette and Daily of York Pennsylvania, will be available to sign your copy, and answer questions. The book will also be available for purchase at the event. Mary Hamilton is the foremost authority on Gitt's life and work. She explores elements ranging from the history of the Gitt family to J.W. Gitt's national impact through his newspaper. Gitt lobbied for civil rights, supported the Progressive movement, and reported "the news all the time without fear or favor, bias or prejudice", which often brought him under scrutiny--including the watchful eye of the FBI. Hamilton is currently a retired associate professor of journalism at St. Bonaventure University, her under-graduate alma mater. From 1963 to 1966 she was a reporter at The Gazette and Daily, covering national stories such as Martin Luther King's March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, along with local courts, schools and politics. During 1967 and 1968 she was a staff writer for the New York newsweekly, The Guardian (formerly National Guardian). After editing movie magazines and living a year in London, she entered academe at Michigan State University and in 1980 was awarded an inter-disciplinary Ph.D. in English (Journalism/American Studies). Her dissertation was based on the post-World War II decade that is part of this book. She lives in her family's old homestead in northcentral Pennsylvania.
