Federal Contracting Basics
Learning the Basics
Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR)
This is the federal government's version of Pennsylvania's Procurement Handbook. Published through the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), this system governs all federal executive agencies' purchases.
U.S. Department of Defense (DoD)
DoD’s purchasing practices and procedures, published through the Office of Small Business Programs, supplement FAR guidelines.
Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC)
PTACs can guide you through the federal, state, and local government procurement processes through a myriad of methods from developing a government marketing strategy, clarifying government contracts, assisting in the preparation of bids and writing proposals, to reviewing bid packages. They also offer the BID MATCH program to match to available government bid opportunities. Find out what these specialists in governement contracting can do for you.
Registering Your Business
Dun & Bradstreet’s Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS)
All federal contractors must register with DUNS for unique ID numbers for each of its physical locations and legal divisions.
Central Contractor Registration (CCR)
Some federal agencies require that federal vendors also register in the CCR database.
Commercial and Government Entity Codes (CAGE)
CAGE Codes, automatically assigned when registering with CCR, identify contractors by location and division. Like DUNS numbers, companies with multiple locations or divisions will have multiple CAGE codes.
