Therapeutic and Adaptive Recreation

The HGAC Recreation Department takes pride in offering "something for everyone" so that leisure hours are time well spent.

Specially equipped bicycles and hand cycles, fishing gear, weight training machines, pool cues, and Braille board games and playing cards are some of the adaptive equipment available which ensures each student the ability to participate in recreational activities. Adaptive programs such as horseback riding and sit skiing (snow and water) make it possible for students with special needs to experience new pleasures.

General Leisure

Arts & crafts, ceramics, closed-captioned movies, pool, ping-pong, bingo, a fitness/wellness center, dances, and a variety of sports provide a well-rounded environment of social activities during the students leisure time.
Places to Go and Transportation

Independent Recreation

Team Sports, Community Outings and Other Events

HGAC is the proud home of the Flood City Rollers wheelchair basketball team. As a member of the HGAC community, students are welcome to try out for the team. The Rollers have received regional and national recognition and compete in tournaments around the country every year.

As a student, you can also play basketball with community groups and businesses that use our gym, or join a competitive local league and compete against other area basketball teams.

Volleyball and softball are other HGAC team sports with an enthusiastic following. Students can opt to play for a student-only team, or student-HGAC staff team and compete in matches against employees of local businesses.

The local community is vital to HGAC recreation and to each student during their stay at the center. YMCA memberships, tickets to professional baseball and hockey games, participation in the Special Olympics, and the Flood City Rollers wheelchair basketball team home games are all offered to students free of charge. School sponsored group trips to historical sites and cultural events are planned on a regular basis with HGAC instructors. The local transit system is fully accessible, allowing each student to independently participate in activities and events the community has to offer.
