Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling
The goal of the Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Unit is to help students define and achieve their personal and vocational goals. Counselors assist students in adjusting to their disabilities, accessing all services in a timely manner, developing vocational skills for employment, and obtaining necessary life skills, to transition into the community after graduation.
The Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Unit staff includes certified rehabilitation counselors and counselors with specialized caseloads who are prepared to address the unique needs of disabled populations, such as drug/alcohol, blindness/visual Impairments, deafness/hard of hearing and cognitive diagnoses. Other counselors manage assistive technology and attendant care services.
Counselors serve as liaisons to HGAC programs such as the Learning Support office and Center for Assistive and Rehabilitation Technology, and to community resources such as the local Social Security and Department of Public Welfare offices.
A rehabilitation counselor for the blind/visually impaired is available to provide technology assistance, alternate format of printed materials and orientation to the HGAC campus.
Counselors may refer students to productive and therapeutic evening programs provided by therapeutic activities services workers and dormitory counselors. Support is provided in the following areas: independent living skills, personal hygiene, anger management, building good relationships, self-esteem, etc.
