Purpose: The intent of this program is to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers. Core partners in these grants must include science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics departments/faculty from institutions of higher education (IHE), including community colleges. Priority will also be given to those grants including a strong partnership with regional PA STEM Initiative projects. Partnerships of higher education, high-need LEAs, and other stakeholders will draw upon the strong disciplinary expertise of the mathematicians, scientists, technology and engineering faculty from higher education institutions to develop professional development activities that will increase student achievement by providing teachers with strong mathematics and/or science content knowledge.
Amount of Funds Available: Approximately $5.4 million for 2009-10
Anticipated # of Grant Awards: up to 10
Length of Grant Awards: up to 3 years pending continued funding at federal level
Eligibility: Any LEA (school district, charter school and/or Intermediate Unit) may apply for funds on behalf of high-need LEAs (see guidelines for definitions).

May 11-12, 2010 – Peer Review Reading/Scoring of Grants Received
May 17, 2010 – Grant Award Announcement and approved programs to begin on/after June 15, 2010
