ALTOONA MARINE KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN
The Department of Defense announced today the death of an Atoona Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Staff Sgt. Matthew N. Ingham, 25, of Altoona, PA died Jan. 11, along with two other Marines, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Ingham, was assigned to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.
DEFENSE, VETERANS AFFAIRS STEP CLOSER TO INTEGRATED RECORDS
The Defense Department soon will join a Veterans Affairs Department and Kaiser Permanente partnership designed to improve the way military veterans and the nation receive health care, the VA’s top health affairs policy advisor said today.

STOP-LOSS PAYMENTS CONTINUE, BUT SOME NO LONGER ELIGIBLE
The fiscal 2010 defense budget extends payments to service members involuntarily extended on active duty under the so-called “Stop Loss” program, but those who received a bonus for voluntarily re-enlisting or extending their service no longer qualify for retroactive Stop Loss pay.

ATTENTION FORMER HARRISBURG GVOAC CLIENTS
All former clients of the Governor’s Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center Harrisburg are advised that the PA Department of Labor and Industry has directed this office to forward all “closed” client case files to them for retaining in the state’s archives. Closed files date back to July 1, 2005. This relocation of files is due to the closing of the GVOACs across the state. Any former client wanting ot obtain their file to re-open a claim or for personal reasons will have to make arrangements with the PA Department of Labor and Industry. DOD LOOKS AT LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF BURN PITS
The Defense Department has launched a study on the possible long-term effects of the smoke emitted from burn pits used in overseas locations such as Iraq.

DOD EVALUATES SEXUAL HARASSMENT & VIOLENCE PROGRAMS AT MILITARY SERVICE ACADEMIES
The Department of Defense (DoD) today released key findings from “The DoD Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the United States Military Service Academies for Academic Program Year (APY) 2008-2009.” The report integrates findings from evaluations of the academies’ sexual assault prevention and response programs, prevention of sexual harassment programs, and cadet and midshipman focus groups.

SHINSEKI SAYS VA’S HOME LOAN PROGRAM A “CONTINUED SUCCESS”
Despite problems in the nation’s housing market, mortgage loans backed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) had a lower foreclosure rate than any other type of home loan in the industry, as of the end of the last fiscal year.
