WIC is a federally funded health and nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children.  WIC helps families by providing checks for buying healthy

supplemental foods from WIC authorized stores, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and help finding healthcare and other community services.  Learn more about WIC benefits.  Participants must meet income guidelines and be pregnant women, new mothers, infants, or children under age five.  In Pennsylvania, 24 local WIC agencies provide services locally to over 265,000 women, infants and children each month at 335 sites throughout the State.

In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.  WIC is an equal opportunity provider.  View full non-discrimination statement.

The new foods are lower in fat, higher in fiber and allow for participant and cultural preferences.  Now, WIC foods align with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations for infant nutrition.  WIC now offers:

  • Foods with a lower fat content - Only 2%, 1% or skim milk is available to children two years of age and older and women.   Low-fat cheese, soy beverage or tofu may be available as a milk option.
  • An increase in the fiber content of the foods - WIC provides whole grain cereals, whole grain breads, canned or dried  beans, and cash value vouchers for fruits and vegetables.  Other options include brown rice and oatmeal.
  • More fruits and vegetables - Cash value vouchers for fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are provided year round.  Women exclusively breastfeeding multiple infants receive $15.00 in fruit and vegetable vouchers - all other women receive $10.00 and children $6.00 in vouchers.  Beginning at 6 months of age, infants can receive jarred fruits and vegetables.

The food package changes also support WIC’s efforts to promote long term breastfeeding.   Breastfeeding mothers receive the most WIC foods and for the longest period of time.  Mothers also receive support services, which will continue for as long as they are needed.  Solid foods are provided to all infants beginning at six months of age.  Fully breastfed infants receive twice the amount of fruits and vegetables as well as infant meats.  Learn more about all food package changes.

WIC is for women who are pregnant or had a baby in the past six months or twelve months if breastfeeding.  Infants and children under age five are eligible for WIC.  Fathers, grandparents, and foster parents who are the legal guardians of young children may apply for WIC on their behalf.

WIC applicants must reside in Pennsylvania, have a medical

or nutritional risk, and have a gross household income, which does not exceed 185% of the U.S. Poverty Income

Guidelines.  Refer to income chart below.
