PRIVILEGES
On October 9, 1998, The Department of Health
promulgated the amending of §6.1 of the regulations of the Department, 28 Pa.
Code Chapter 6, to permit the prescribing of certain medications by
optometrists certified to prescribe and administer pharmaceutical agents under
§4.1 of the Optometric Practice and Licensure Act.
An updated list of these
pharmaceuticals accompanies this Bulletin preceded with a brief explanation
identifying the level of optometrist prescribing privileges.
PACE is distributing this list
to assist PACE providers in correctly dispensing pharmaceuticals prescribed by
optometrists.
Please
note that PACE on-line edits DO NOT EXIST to deny payment for pharmaceuticals
not appearing on this list. Moreover during
a PACE audit, any pharmaceuticals paid by the Program that are not in
compliance with the Department of Health’s regulation governing both
pharmaceuticals and prescribing privileges for optometrists must be
disallowed.
