NATURE OF WORK

Roadway Programs Technicians collect, review, and analyze data in a highway maintenance management and inventory control system, or a roadway management system.  Employees in the maintenance management and inventory control system plan, schedule, and implement maintenance operations; review and analyze data concerning completed work, such as time, materials, and equipment used; and maintain the status of the work budgets.  Employees in the roadway management system conduct field studies to assess pavement surfaces, and maintain a tracking system to monitor roadway management or maintenance programs.

A Roadway Programs Technician 1 works with a higher level employee.  Specific instructions are provided and work is frequently reviewed.  A Roadway Programs Technician 2 performs advanced technical duties with more independence and may serve as a team leader.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

Minimum Requirements

Roadway Programs Technician 1 – One year of experience as a Technical Assistant; OR One year of experience in analysis of data utilized in planning and scheduling of work, materials and equipment and graduation from high school or GED equivalent; OR An associate’s degree in the field of Business Administration, Computer Science, Highway Engineering Technology or other closely related program; OR An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Roadway Programs Technician 2 – One year as a Roadway Programs Technician 1; OR One year of experience in analysis of data utilized in planning and scheduling of work, materials and equipment, and an associate’s degree in the field of Business Administration, Computer Science, Highway Engineering Technology or other closely related program; OR An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Clarification of Requirements

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education.  Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.  The job titles mentioned above are in the State Employment System.

All jobs are in the Department of Transportation.  There are 29 filled Roadway Programs Technician 1 jobs and 39 Roadway Programs Technician 2 jobs located in Engineering and Maintenance Districts, and in the Central Office in Harrisburg.  The Department expects to hire or promote four technicians within the next year.  Some positions in the district offices are seasonal, April through November.  The actual number and locations of hires will depend on the needs of the Department and the availability of funds.

For jobs in the Engineering District offices, employment preference may be given to residents of the counties within the district where the jobs are located.

Promotion preference may be given to employees who work in the Engineering District where the job openings occur.

The test will be given as soon as possible after applications are received.  The test will be held in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Civil Service offices, Monday through Friday.  To make an appointment for one of these locations, submit your completed paper application to the office where you wish to be tested or apply online at www.scsc.state.pa.us.  The test will also be held on selected Saturdays at a variety of Statewide locations.  See the "Test Information" section of your application for details.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

If your name is on an eligible list for these jobs and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

TEST RESULTS

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
