NATURE OF WORK

 

You will train inmates in a state correctional institution in the trade indicated by the job title.  You will provide on-the-job instruction in trade methods, care and use of tools and safety practices; and be responsible for inmate custody and discipline during training and as the inmates carry out work assignments.  You will also perform skilled maintenance, repair and construction duties as required to maintain operations of the institution and may lead inmates as they assist in this work.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You may be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.  If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

You must pass a background investigation.  After you receive a conditional offer of employment, you must undergo a medical examination.

 

If you are hired, you must successfully complete a 4-week training program at the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections' Central Training Academy in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County.

Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the trade for which you apply; OR an

equivalent combination of experience and/or training which includes 1 year of journey level work in the trade for which you apply.

 

Clarification of Requirements

"An equivalent combination of experience and/or training which includes 1 year of journey level work in the trade for which you apply" means you may qualify if you have experience and/or training equal to the number of years required to complete an apprenticeship in the particular trade (usually 3 or 4 years), plus 1 year of skilled journey level experience in the tradeBe sure to give complete details on your application about the work you have done or training you have had, even if you must attach additional sheets.

TESTING

 

The examination consists of 2 parts: a written test weighted two-thirds and a rating of experience and training weighted one-third.  Either part may be cancelled by the Commission and the weight added to the remaining part.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

You will also be rated on your experience and training.  Your score will be based on what you report on your application and supplement.

 

You must provide complete and accurate information.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.

 

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after six months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results."  A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these jobs and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
