NATURE OF WORK

 

Registry Technician

You will provide technical support for a public health registry, such as vital statistics, cancer or immunization.  Duties include editing and analyzing health information contained in electronic and hard copy documentation submitted by health care facilities and other health information providers; using specialized computer applications to process, analyze, link and consolidate data; and assisting professional staff in performing quality assurance activities to assure the completeness, accuracy and validity of data in the public health information system.  Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior.

 

Registry Specialist

You will plan, organize and develop standardized health record reporting procedures for hospitals and other healthcare facilities throughout Pennsylvania.  Duties include evaluating and monitoring facilities for adherence to reporting requirements; providing technical support to healthcare personnel related to the design and maintenance of electronic data reporting, including problem resolution and proper coding; performing quality assurance activities to assure the completeness, accuracy, validity and timeliness of data in the public health information system; and preparing summary reports with findings and recommendations concerning each facility's reporting system(s).  Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative superior.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Necessary Special Requirement

 

Registry Technician

Current certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or eligibility for certification; or certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Board for Certification of Registrars (or current certifying body).

 

NOTE

Effective October 1, 2002, the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) became the appropriate certifying body for this credential.

 

Applicants who are eligible to take the examination for certification as a Registered Health Information Technician with the American Health Information Management Association will be accepted pending certification, which must occur within 18 months after employment.

 

Registry Specialist

Current (registration) certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) with the American Health Information Management Association or eligibility for certification.

 

Applicants who are eligible to take the examination for (registration) certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator with the American Health Information Management Association will be accepted pending (registration) certification, which must occur within 18 months after employment.

 

Minimum Requirements

An associate's degree from an accredited Health Information Technology (HIT) program; OR an associate's degree from a foreign HIT program with which the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) has a reciprocal agreement; OR current certification by the AHIMA as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT); OR current certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) by the National Board for Certification of Registrars (or current certifying body).

 

Registry Specialist

 

A bachelor's degree from an accredited Health Information Administration (HIA) program; OR a bachelor's degree and a certificate in HIA from an accredited program; OR a bachelor's degree and a current Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certificate as specified by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA); OR a bachelor's degree from a foreign HIA program that has an agreement of reciprocity with AHIMA.

TESTING

 

Your Application for Employment/Promotion will be used to determine if you meet the Minimum Experience and Training Requirements, and Necessary Special Requirements for these job titles.  It also will be used to rate and score your qualifications.

 

The rating and scoring of your qualifications is the test.  You must provide complete and accurate information.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.

 

If you meet the Minimum Experience and Training Requirements and Necessary Special Requirements you will receive a final earned rating.  If you do not meet these requirements you will be deemed ineligible.

 

If you possess an RHIT, RHIA or CTR registration or certification you must enter the title, number and expiration date in the “Licenses or Certificates” section of your Application for Employment/Promotion.  If you have a “Confirmation of Eligibility” form from AHIMA you should include a copy of it with your application; or write your name and Social Security Number at the top of the form and fax to (717) 787-8650.

 

If you were previously found ineligible, but now meet the requirements you may reapply.  A new Application for Employment/Promotion is required for a retest.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
