Librarians 1 and 2 perform professional library duties in the State Library, major departmental or state institutional libraries. They assist library users; perform reference duties; research data; prepare bibliographies/reading lists using computers; prepare displays/exhibits; review publications to inform staff of current developments and select and/or process books, periodicals, pamphlets and other library materials. They catalog, classify and maintain the library’s collection and supervise technical and clerical personnel.
Librarians 2 perform more complex assignments and have a greater degree of responsibility than Librarians 1.
Corrections Librarians oversee the operations of a full service library in a correctional institution, supervising salaried and inmate staff, maintaining a general reading and law library, and assisting educational professionals at the institution.
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
For positions in the Department of Corrections: You must pass a background investigation. After you receive a conditional offer of employment, you must undergo a medical examination. After being hired, you must attend and complete a 3-week basic training program at the Department of Corrections’ Central Training Academy in Elizabethtown.
Minimum Requirements
Librarian 1 – A Master’s Degree in Library Science; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Librarian 2 – Two years of experience in professional library work and a Master’s Degree in Library Science; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Corrections Librarian – One year of professional library experience and a Master’s Degree in Library Science; OR three years of professional library experience and a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Clarification of Requirements
You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

Positions are in the State Library and various departmental libraries in Harrisburg, and throughout the state in correctional institutions and state hospitals. There are 12 filled Librarian 1, 19 filled Librarian 2, and 20 filled Corrections Librarian positions.
Approximately 2-5 people are hired each year in each job title.

The test will be given as soon as possible after applications are received. The test will be held in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Civil Service offices, Monday through Friday. To make an appointment for one of these locations, submit your completed application to the office where you wish to be tested or apply online at www.scsc.state.pa.us. The test will also be held on selected Saturdays at a variety of Statewide locations. See the "Test Information" section of your application for details.
If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for these jobs and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
