NATURE OF WORK 

 

Employees conduct inspections of funeral homes for compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations.  They check for possession of current licenses; inspect preparation rooms to ensure that required equipment and materials are present and adequate, and that proper sanitary/safety procedures are observed; conduct spot audits of pre-needs account contracts and funds; and complete detailed inspection forms noting any violations.  They may also assist in investigations into alleged violations.  In selected cases of minor infractions they may issue citations in accordance with applicable law and established policy.  They may also testify at licensing board hearings or appear as witnesses for the state in formal court proceedings. 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be willing to travel an average of 1800 miles per month to and from inspection sites within an assigned region.  Some overnight travel may be involved.  Travel expenses will be paid.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Necessary Special Requirement

 

Possession of a license to practice as a funeral director issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Funeral Directors.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Ten years of experience as a practicing funeral director; and such training as may have been gained through graduation from an approved school of embalming or mortuary science; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Clarification of Requirements

 

The equivalency statement under “Minimum Requirements” means that completion of a formal apprenticeship with a licensed funeral director may be substituted for the required training.

Mortuary Inspectors are employed by the Department of State.  There is one position in each of the following regional offices: Harrisburg (Dauphin County) and King of Prussia (Montgomery County); one vacancy exists in the regional office in Pittsburgh (Allegheny County).

Your application will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the Minimum and Necessary Special Requirements.  If you meet these requirements you will receive a score.

 

It is important that you provide information showing you possess the Minimum and Necessary Special Requirements.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in disqualification.

 

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results."  A new application is required for the retest.

 

TEST RESULTS
