NATURE OF WORK
Automotive Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics and Automotive Mechanic Supervisors – Maintain, repair, overhaul and inspect automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, air compressors, etc. You will troubleshoot, test, install, adjust, assemble, replace and repair various components of the equipment. Automotive and Diesel Mechanics may function as lead workers over helpers or semi-skilled workers. Automotive Mechanic Supervisors plan, lay out and assign work to mechanics, semi-skilled workers; maintain work records and prepare reports.
Automotive Equipment Foremen – Supervise equipment operators, mechanics
and other garage personnel in the maintenance, repair and dispatch of
automotive and maintenance equipment, and the upkeep of the building facilities
used for equipment storage and maintenance.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Minimum Requirements
Automotive Mechanic – Four years of experience in the automotive mechanic trade; OR completion of an approved apprenticeship; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Automotive Mechanic Supervisor – Three years of experience as a journey-level automotive mechanic.
Diesel Mechanic – Three years of experience as a journey-level automotive mechanic, which included 1 year of experience in diesel engine fuel systems and diesel equipment repair and maintenance or completion of a recognized course of study within the diesel mechanics trade; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Automotive Equipment Foreman – Two years of experience as an Automotive Mechanic Supervisor; OR 2 years of experience as an Automotive Mechanic or Equipment Operator B; OR 4 years of experience in the operation or maintenance of a variety of automotive, groundskeeping or construction equipment; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
For some jobs, hiring agencies may require that persons hired meet additional requirements. For those specific jobs, offers of employment will be made ONLY to individuals who meet the following additional requirements:
Certification as a Pennsylvania Certified Inspection Mechanic; (Automotive Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic and Automotive Mechanic Supervisor).
Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license of the class appropriate to the vehicle operated and supplemented by the endorsements required by law for operation of specific equipment; (Automotive Mechanic and Automotive Mechanic Supervisor).
Possession of a CFC-12 Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, a 134A Refrigerant Recycling Certificate, or a Compressed Natural Gas Certificate; (Automotive Mechanic and Automotive Mechanic Supervisor).
One year of experience or training in the repair or maintenance of diesel engines; (Automotive Mechanic Supervisor).
Clarification of Requirements
You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted. For Automotive Mechanic Supervisor ONLY, no substitutions are permitted for the required experience.

There are 54 filled positions: 41 Automotive Mechanics, 2 Supervisors, 2 Diesel Mechanics, and 9 Foremen. These are geographically distributed in 36 Counties, mostly in rural areas. The primary employers are the Department of Public Welfare and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Five Automotive Mechanic vacancies are expected within the next 12 months.
Additional opportunities may occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission Office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Civil Service Commission Offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results." A new application is required for a retest.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
