NATURE OF WORK
You will perform a variety of technical duties in the field and in the office to analyze traffic data, and develop and implement solutions to traffic control problems. Work is performed in the areas of work zone traffic control, traffic operations, signs and signals, and safety and crash analysis. Work also involves recommending operational improvements for established traffic control; and training construction, municipal, and contractor personnel in the proper installation and application of traffic control devices. Work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed for adherence to traffic engineering standards.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Minimum Requirements
One year of experience as an Engineering Technician; OR three years of experience performing transportation engineering technical assignments, such as traffic control data collection, highway sign surveys, traffic signal inspection, materials sampling, testing, or inspection, construction inspection, bridge inspection, survey work, utility relocation, roadway programs management, or roadway materials control; OR one year of experience performing transportation engineering technical assignments, such as traffic control data collection, highway sign surveys, traffic signal inspection, materials sampling, testing, or inspection, construction inspection, bridge inspection, survey work, utility relocation, roadway programs management, or roadway materials control; and an associate’s degree in the field of mathematics, statistics, or a civil engineering technology; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

Traffic Control Technicians are employed at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District Engineering Offices throughout the Commonwealth. There are currently 38 filled positions. PennDOT expects to hire up to 9 Traffic Control Technicians in the District Engineering Offices located in Oil City, Clearfield, Dunmore, King of Prussia, Harrisburg, Uniontown, and Indiana over the next year.
Additional opportunities may occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.
The 2 1/2 hour test will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take this test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your “Notice of Examination Results”. A new application is required.
If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
