NATURE OF WORK

 

Transportation Construction Inspector – You will test and inspect construction materials and inspect work on roads, bridges or other transportation projects to ensure compliance with established standards and contract specifications.

 

Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor – You will plan, organize, assign and review the work of Transportation Construction Inspectors; and use independent judgment to make minor, on-site technical decisions.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.  If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.

 

For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Minimum Requirements

Transportation Construction Inspector – One year of experience as an Engineering Technician; OR two years of construction inspection work which required reading and interpreting plans and specifications, and graduation from high school; OR one year of construction inspection work which required reading and interpreting plans and specifications; and an Associate Degree in an appropriate engineering technology.

 

Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor – Two years experience as a Transportation Construction Inspector; OR three years of experience in construction inspection and graduation from high school or equivalent certification of formal training.  Completion of a training program in construction inspection sanctioned by the using agency may be substituted for high school graduation.  An Associate Degree in an engineering or closely related technology may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

 

Both Titles – An equivalent combination of experience and/or training which provides the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.

 

Clarification of Requirements

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education.  Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

These positions are in the Engineering Districts of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.  There are 411 filled Transportation Construction Inspector positions and 211 filled Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor positions.  Positions are located across the state.  You may be hired as a permanent or seasonal employee.  The agency usually hires 50 Transportation Construction Inspector positions each year; and 5-10 Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor positions each year.  These positions may be permanent or seasonal.  The construction season runs from March to November.

 

Employment preference will be given to residents of the counties within the Engineering District where the jobs are located.

 

Promotion preference will be given to employees who work in the counties within the Engineering District where the job openings occur.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.  You will have a maximum of 3 hours to complete the test.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results."  A new application is required for a retest.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
