NATURE OF WORK
You will assist state and federal veterinarians implementing animal and poultry health and disease control programs by traveling to field locations to take blood, tissue, and other diagnostic samples from domestic animals and poultry; helping to restrain domestic animals; and explaining to farmers and animal owners the provisions of animal health regulations as they affect their operations. You will inspect animal dealers, pet shops, poultry hatcheries, auctions, and renderers to ensure compliance with Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements and regulations for sanitation, carcass disposal, and proper record keeping. You will perform work with considerable independence in an assigned region for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. You will need to periodically use protective clothing and equipment to guard against infection and the spread of disease.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Necessary Special Requirements
You must possess a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
You must possess current certification as a Poultry Technician or have the ability to gain certification during the probationary period.
Minimum Requirements
Graduation from an approved Veterinary Medical Technology Training program and 2 years of experience in the raising or handling of animals used for a variety of commercial purposes including food animals and farm animals; OR a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Animal Science, Dairy Science, Poultry Science, or a closely related area with at least 16 credits in animal science; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Clarification of Requirements
You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

Domestic Animal Health Inspectors are state wide positions based out of 7 regional offices of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. These offices are located in Meadville, Crawford County; Montoursville, Lycoming County; Tunkhannock, Wyoming County; Gibsonia, Allegheny County; Altoona, Blair County; Harrisburg, Dauphin County; and Creamery, Montgomery County.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office. You will have a maximum of 2 hours to complete the test.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
