NATURE OF WORK
You will participate in a program of classroom instruction and on-the-job training to learn the state laws, regulations, and codes pertaining to the construction, installation and maintenance of boilers and other pressure vessels; to learn the proper investigative techniques for determining the causes of accidents; and to learn to calculate allowable limits of pressure, strength and stresses. Trainees assist experienced Commissioned Boiler Inspectors in inspecting all factors affecting the condition and operation of boilers and other pressure vessels.

You must be willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job. Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for this job title.
Post Employment Requirement
Employees in this job must obtain both a valid National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Commission, and a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Commission within the probationary period.
Conditions of Employment
Certain positions in this job will require possession of a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements
One year of experience in the design, construction, operation or inspection of high pressure boilers and unfired pressure vessels; and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering; OR three years of experience in the design, construction, operation or inspection of high pressure boilers and unfired pressure vessels, and an associate degree in mechanical technology; OR five years of experience in one of the following: (a) high pressure boiler and unfired pressure vessel construction or repair, (b) in charge of high pressure boiler and unfired pressure vessel operation, (c) inspection of high pressure boilers and unfired pressure vessels.

Commissioned Boiler Inspector Trainee positions exist in the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. Trainees who successfully complete the training program are promoted to Commissioned Boiler Inspectors. These positions are located throughout the state. It is anticipated that 1 or 2 vacancies will be filled annually.
Lists created by this test will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING
Your application will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements. If you meet these requirements you will receive a score. You will receive additional credit for inspection experience as an inspector for a governmental agency or an insurance company ensuring compliance with established laws, regulations and/or codes; OR quality control experience physically inspecting the entire construction process. Both types of experience must have involved high pressure boilers and pressure vessels. If you possess such experience, be sure to describe it in Section 11 of you application.
You must provide complete and accurate information. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.
If you take this test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your “Notice of Examination Results.” A new application is required.
If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
