NATURE OF WORK
As a Commissioned Boiler Inspector, you will perform highly specialized inspection work. Work involves conducting inspections of boilers, unfired pressure vessels, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) facilities, and flammable and combustible liquids installations; assessing vessel design, construction and installation; completing inspection reports and related documentation; making recommendations for issue or denial of operating certificates; and providing guidance on compliance with state codes and laws.
As a Commissioned Boiler Inspector Supervisor, you will plan, assign, and review the work performed by commissioned inspectors. You will also conduct inspections and audits as required; and provide training to subordinates and others on applicable laws, regulations and codes.

Conditions of EmploymentBoth Job Titles – Certain positions in this job will require possession of a valid driver’s license.
Necessary Special RequirementBoth Job Titles – Possession of a valid National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Commission; OR passed the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Examination as defined in Section 4 of NB-263, Rules for Commissioned Inspectors, and meet all qualifications of Section 2.2.2 of NB-263 so that a National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Commission may be obtained.
Post Employment Requirements
Both Job Titles - Employees in this job must obtain a valid National Board of
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Commission and a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Commission within the probationary period.
Minimum Requirements
Commissioned Boiler Inspector – One year as a Commissioned Boiler Inspector Trainee; OR two years experience conducting inspections of the design, construction and installation of boilers and unfired pressure vessels.
Commissioned Boiler Inspector Supervisor – Three years of experience as a Commissioned Boiler Inspector; OR three years experience conducting inspections of the design, construction and installation of boilers and unfired pressure vessels.

There are 23 Commissioned Boiler Inspector and 2 Commissioned Boiler Inspector Supervisor filled positions located throughout the state in the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. All employees work out of their own homes and have responsibility for work in assigned counties. It is anticipated that 1 to 2 vacancies will be filled annually.
Lists created by this test will be used to fill future vacancies as they occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING
Your application will be evaluated to determine whether you meet the Minimum and Necessary Special Requirements. If you meet these requirements you will receive a score.
It is important that you provide information showing you possess a valid National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspector Commission OR that you passed the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Examination. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in disqualification.
If you take this test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your “Notice of Examination Results.” A new application is required.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
