NATURE OF WORK
You will perform environmental engineering duties in the broad area of environmental pollution control, which could include: waste water treatment; sanitary sewer collection and conveyance; solid waste treatment, processing, storage, and disposal; water distribution, filtration, storage, and pumping; storm sewer and drainage areas; and air pollution control.
Your duties may include designing or reviewing designs for environmental facilities; developing or reviewing contracts, plans, and specifications; conducting field studies and surveys; inspecting the operation and maintenance of facilities; preparing, reviewing, and recommending action on permit applications; preparing and presenting technical reports; and developing regulations, guidelines, standards, and procedures for the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of environmental engineering facilities.
Similar work is assigned to both job levels but is more complex, has greater impact, and is accomplished with more independence at the Engineer level. In addition, employees at the Engineer level provide consultation and technical expertise to public jurisdictions and organizations.

You must be of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job. Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for these job titles.
Necessary Special Requirement
Certain positions within these jobs will require possession of a valid driver’s license.
Certain positions at the Engineer level will require possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
Minimum Requirements
Environmental Engineering Specialist - Successful completion of the training program for Environmental Engineering Trainee; OR one year of professional experience in environmental engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or in any engineering field that includes or is supplemented by 9 credits in environmental engineering; OR two years of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR one year of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
Environmental Engineer - Two years as an Environmental Engineering Specialist; OR three years of professional experience in environmental engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or in any engineering field that includes or is supplemented by 9 credits in environmental engineering; OR four years of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR three years of professional experience in environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
Clarification of Requirements
Graduate study in environmental engineering or in a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

DEP normally fills approximately 5 vacancies from employment or promotion lists in these job titles each year.

You will be rated on your experience and training. Your score will be based on information you report on your application and application supplement.
You must provide complete and accurate information. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.
If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results." A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
