NATURE OF WORK
As a Civil Engineer in the Hydraulics specialty, you will conduct feasibility studies for flood control products; compute or review the hydraulics of streams to determine the effects of structures; develop or review design plans and specifications for dams, levees, channels, floodwalls and other hydraulic structures; and investigate water management problems.
Civil Engineers and Senior Civil Engineers generally perform similar duties; however, the jobs differ in the degree of responsibility. Senior Civil Engineers generally have project accountability and oversee consultants and other engineers involved in the project.

You must be of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job. Pennsylvania residency currently is waived for these job titles.
Condition of Employment
Both Job Codes: Certain positions in these job titles will require possession of a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s license.
For 1113H Only: Certain positions will require possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
Minimum Requirements
Civil Engineer – Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program; OR 1 year of civil engineering experience in hydraulics and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; OR 4 years of civil engineering experience in hydraulics and an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline; OR 5 years of civil engineering experience in hydraulics and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR an equivalent combination of experience or training.
Senior Civil Engineer - 2 years of professional civil engineering experience in hydraulics and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; OR 5 years of civil engineering experience in hydraulics and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; and an associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology or a closely related engineering discipline; OR 6 years of civil engineering experience in hydraulics and an Engineer–in-Training Certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

There are currently 17 Civil Engineers (Hydraulic) and 58 Senior Civil Engineers (Hydraulic). The majority of these job titles are located in the headquarters’ office of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Harrisburg, Dauphin County. The other DEP jobs are located in DEP field offices throughout the state. These locations include Centre, Washington, Montgomery, Luzerne, Lycoming, Allegheny, Crawford and Lawrence Counties. There is 1 Civil Engineer (Hydraulic) position in the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and 1 in the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, both located in Dauphin County.
There are 2 Senior Civil Engineers (Hydraulic) in the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and 1 in the Pennsylvania Department of General Services, all located in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, and 1 in the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission located in Centre County.
Approximately 15 vacancies are filled each year.

TESTING
You will be rated on your experience and training. Your score will be based on information you report on your application and application supplement.
You must provide complete and accurate information. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.
If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results." A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
