NATURE OF WORK
Electrical Engineers perform professional engineering work in the design, construction, and inspection of a variety of electrical systems and equipment.
You will work in areas such as a building’s electrical distribution system; conversion of a facility to a total electrical base; tunnel and highway interchange lighting and signaling; intelligent transportation systems; parking lot illumination; security and intrusion alarm systems; fire detection and suppression systems; electro-mechanical controls for heating, ventilation, air conditioning and elevators; building or highway management systems including telecommunications, data, voice and video communications; and installation and operation of electrical equipment in and around deep bituminous coal mines.
Work at the Engineer 1 level normally includes assignments involving component parts of a system when the controlling parameters have been developed and may involve coordinating with other architectural or engineering disciplines. The work at the Engineer 2 level is more advanced with responsibility for the complete engineering project. It involves considerable independence in developing the technical details, coordinating with other architectural and engineering disciplines, and contacting other public agencies, consultants or contractors to obtain compliance with Commonwealth standards and needs. The work at the Electrical Engineering Consultant level includes solving design and construction problems using advanced and innovative applications of engineering principles; and advising management on the advantages, disadvantages, and effects of utilizing technology and/or changing existing engineering and materials standards. Electrical Engineering Supervisors, in addition to performing the work described previously, supervise electrical engineers.
