Employees in most positions work a 37 1/2 hour week, however some employees work a 40 hour week.

NATURE OF WORK
You will be responsible for the safe, efficient and continuous production of steam in a high-pressure boiler plant. Operators 1 fire boilers, monitor water and steam levels, operate auxiliary equipment and make minor adjustments as necessary. Operators 2 perform skilled mechanical and limited lead work and may be responsible for the operation of the boiler plant on an assigned shift. This involves maintaining shift records and recognizing changes in operation that can lead to possible problems.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

Minimum Requirements
Utility Plant Operator 1
One year as a Utility Plant Helper; OR 1 year of comparable boiler plant experience.
Utility Plant Operator 2
Two years of experience as a Utility Plant Operator 1; OR 3 years of comparable boiler plant experience.
Both job titles
Equivalent combinations of experience and training are acceptable.

There are 36 filled Utility Plant Operator 1 positions and 96 filled Utility Plant Operator 2 positions located throughout the state. Most filled positions are located at state facilities such as state schools, hospitals and centers. The primary employing agency is the Department of Public Welfare. A few positions are filled by both the Department of Education and the Department of Labor and Industry.
Approximately 5-8 new hires occur in these jobs each year, mostly at the Operator 1 level.
Additional opportunities may occur due to normal turnover from retirements, promotions, transfers, resignations and so forth.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission Office.
You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test which will cover the following subject areas:

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Civil Service Commission Offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
