Full-time work (Liquor Store Clerk 1) on initial hire is only available in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery Counties.  The remaining counties hire only Intermittent (PART-TIME) Liquor Store Clerks.

NATURE OF WORK

 

Employees in both job titles sell merchandise to customers, assist customers in obtaining merchandise, total purchases on a computerized cash register, and collect money and make change.  They stock shelves; take inventory; complete forms pertaining to store operations; unload shipments from trucks; and mop, sweep, dust, clean windows, etc.

 

Intermittent Liquor Store Clerks work on a permanent part-time basis.

MIMIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 

You must pass the test.  You must be at least 18 years of age within 60 days of the date you apply.

Conditions of Employment

 

You must be willing and able to accept the conditions listed below in order to be successful in these jobs.  If you are not willing or able to accept all of these conditions, do not apply.  By submitting your application, you are indicating that you are willing and able to:

 

1.    Work on Saturdays and Sundays.  Normal store hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.  Sunday store hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Work schedules are posted no later than 3 p.m. on the Friday before the next work week.

 

          A.  Intermittent Liquor Store Clerk  (PART-TIME)

Scheduled hours depend upon the needs of the individual store(s) to which you are assigned.  However, hours or store assignments may change on short notice due to operational needs.  You will work at least 4 hours each day you are scheduled and between 13 and 32 hours a week.  You also may be required to travel to different store locations in those counties you selected on your Civil Service Application.

 

          B.  Liquor Store Clerk 1

This position is full-time with a normal week of 37.5 hours.

 

2.    Unload shipments of merchandise once or twice a week.  This involves lifting, carrying and stacking cases of alcoholic beverages; using a hand truck; and climbing a ladder.  Unloading is usually a 2-4 hour operation.  You must also lift and carry merchandise in order to stock store shelves.  Cases weigh up to 65 pounds.  Most weigh between 30 and 40 pounds, with many between 40 and 50 pounds.

 

3.    Operate a computerized cash register and be responsible and accountable for all cash, check, gift card/gift certificate and debit/credit card transactions while assigned to the register.

 

4.    Perform custodial duties, such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, cleaning windows and lavatories and removing snow and ice.

Upon completion of the contractual probationary period of 90 working days or 6 months, whichever is less, Intermittent Liquor Store Clerks may request to work a minimum of 20 hours a week.  Part-time employees choosing this option will be required to maintain full availability and work in any store in the supervisory district or county (whichever is smaller).

 

After successful completion of 13 pay periods (26 weeks), Intermittent Liquor Store Clerks are eligible for reassignment to Liquor Store Clerk 1 positions in seniority order as vacancies occur.

TESTING

 

The written test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.  You will have a maximum of 2 1/2 hours to complete the test.

The test will be held in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, or wish to test for an additional classification from this test announcement, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  You must submit a new application to be retested.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
