If you successfully complete the one year training period, you will be promoted to Air Quality Specialist, Mining Specialist, Radiation Protection Specialist, Sanitarian, Sewage Planning Specialist 1, Solid Waste Specialist, Surface Mine Conservation Inspector, or Water Quality Specialist, depending on your area of specialization as a Trainee.  You will receive a salary increase when promoted.

 

NATURE OF WORK

 

You will participate in on-the-job and formal training to develop the knowledge and abilities necessary for professional proficiency in air pollution, solid waste, water quality, radiation, mining, sewage planning or sanitation.  Assignments increase in scope and complexity as you gain technical proficiency in the work.  Initially, you will assist higher-level specialists in performing inspections, investigations, enforcement, public relations, and consultation assignments.  After you demonstrate the ability to perform the work, advanced assignments are given and you will work under the technical guidance of higher-level specialists or supervisors.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.  If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission's offices listed at the end of this announcement.

 

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Necessary Special Requirement

You must have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.

 

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor’s degree with major course work in an appropriate physical or biological science or a closely related environmental field.

 

Clarification of Requirements

You may take the test if you have completed 90 or more credit hours and expect to receive a bachelor's degree that includes 24 credit hours in the physical, biological, and environmental sciences, regardless of major, within the next 7 months.  You must provide proof of your degree before you start work.

 

Twenty-four credit hours in the physical, biological or environmental sciences, regardless of major, are considered qualifying.

The PA Department of Health has positions located in Harrisburg (Dauphin County).  However, most jobs exist in the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Regional Offices, Mining Offices, and District Offices at various locations throughout the Commonwealth.  Most jobs exist within DEP in the following locations (regions/counties):  Southwest Region - Pittsburgh, (Allegheny); Beaver Falls, (Beaver); Ebensburg, (Cambria); Uniontown, (Fayette); Coal Center, (Washington); Greensburg, (Westmoreland).  Northwest Region - Knox, (Clarion); Meadville, (Crawford); New Castle, (Lawrence); Warren, (Warren).  Southcentral Region - Reading, (Berks); Altoona, (Blair); Harrisburg, (Dauphin); Lancaster, (Lancaster); York, (York).  Northcentral Region - Philipsburg, (Centre); Williamsport, (Lycoming); Sunbury, (Northumberland); Mansfield, (Tioga).  Southeast Region - Norristown, (Montgomery).  Northeast Region - Scranton, (Lackawanna); Wilkes-Barre, (Luzerne); Swiftwater, (Monroe); Bethlehem, (Northampton); and Pottsville, (Schuylkill).

 

DEP hires approximately 50 Environmental Trainees each year.  The actual location of the vacant positions has not yet been determined.

 

Employment preference may be given to residents of the counties within the region where positions will be filled.  Promotion preference may be given to employees of the region having the opening.

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission Office.  You will have a maximum of 3 hours to complete the test.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission Offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 11 months from the date of your “Notice of Examination Results.”  A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
