NATURE OF WORK
This is professional nursing work in the psychosocial, physical, and/or mental health nursing care and treatment of individuals having mental or physical illness, developmental disability, and/or dysfunctional behavior.
Registered Nurses (State) provide nursing services at state mental health hospitals, state centers, youth development centers and youth forestry camps, veterans' homes and centers, and infirmaries of state correctional facilities. At the Registered Nurse level, an employee performs as a head nurse, charge nurse, staff nurse, or an assessment coordinator providing specialized nursing care and treatment services in a Commonwealth facility.
Registered Nurses (Local Government) provide nursing services for County Mental Health/Intellectual Disability programs and County Children, Youth and Family programs. At the Registered Nurse 2 level, an employee performs as a head nurse, charge nurse, staff nurse, or as an assessment coordinator providing specialized nursing care and treatment services.
Registered Nurse Supervisors (State and Local Government) supervise professional and non-professional patient care personnel.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for this job title.
Some of the positions in these job titles come under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law. If you are a final candidate for a position covered by the Child Protective Services Law, you will have to provide reports on your background, at your own expense, from such sources as the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. If you are not a Pennsylvania resident, you must also obtain a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information, at your own expense, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Some of the positions in these job titles come under the provisions of the Older Adults Protective Services Act. If you are a final candidate for a position covered by the Older Adults Protective Service Act, you will have to obtain a report of criminal record information, at your own expense, from the Pennsylvania State Police or a statement that the State Police Central Repository contains no information relating to you. If you are not currently a Pennsylvania resident, or if you are currently a Pennsylvania resident and have not been a resident for two years prior to the date that you received notification that you are a final candidate, you are also required to furnish a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information, at your own expense, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
After you receive a conditional offer of employment you must undergo a medical examination.
For positions in the PA Department of Corrections, you must also pass a background investigation. After being hired, you must attend and complete a 3-week basic training program at the Department of Corrections’ Central Training Academy in Elizabethtown, PA, which is located in Lancaster County.
Necessary Special Requirements - For All Job Titles
Possession of a current license to practice as a registered nurse issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing; or possession of a non-renewable temporary practice permit issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
Clarification For The Necessary Special Requirement - For All Job Titles
If you possess a license to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by another jurisdiction, or if you have completed an approved professional nursing education program, you may apply for this exam program. At the time of appointment to a position, you must show proof of possession of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Registered Nurse license.
If you are within 7 months of graduating from a school of nursing approved by the State Board of Nursing, you are eligible to apply for this exam program. At the time of appointment to a position, you must show proof of possession of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Registered Nurse license.

Condition of Employment - For All Job Titles
Employees possessing non-renewable temporary practice permits must obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse within the one year period defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
Clarification of the Condition of Employment - For All Job Titles
Temporary practice permits of Registered Nurses endorsing into Pennsylvania from another state are valid for up to 1 year from the issue date, or to the date of notification of the results of the licensing examination, whichever is first. Temporary practice permits of graduates of State Board of Nursing-approved schools of nursing are valid for up to 1 year from graduation or to the date of notification of the results of the licensing examination, whichever is first. If you hold a “graduate temporary practice permit,” you must be supervised as required by the Registered Nurse Law. If you do not take the licensure examination within the 1 year period as defined by the Board, or fail the licensure examination, the temporary practice permit shall expire. If you do not possess a current, valid, Pennsylvania Registered Nurse license or temporary practice permit, you will be subject to removal from your position.
You must report your active licensure number and expiration date on your “Application for Employment/Promotion (SCSC-1).”
Minimum Requirements
Registered Nurse (State) – Possession of the Necessary Special Requirement listed.
Registered Nurse Supervisor (State) - Three years as a Registered Nurse (Commonwealth job title); OR four years of professional nursing experience providing care and treatment services consistent with those needed for individuals with a mental or physical injury or illness and/or a developmental disability.
Registered Nurse 1 (Local Government) - Possession of the Necessary Special Requirement listed.
Registered Nurse 2 (Local Government) - One year as a Registered Nurse 1; OR one year of professional nursing experience; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Registered Nurse Supervisor (Local Government) - Three years as a Registered Nurse 2; OR three years of professional nursing experience, which included two years at the advanced professional nursing level consistent with the type of health care setting providing care and treatment for individuals with a mental or physical injury or illness and/or a developmental disability; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Clarification of Requirements for Registered Nurse Supervisor - Local Government
Registered Nurse Supervisor – A master’s degree in nursing may be substituted for up to 1 year of advanced professional experience.
TESTING
You will be rated on your experience and training. Your score will be based on information you report on your application and application supplement.
You must provide your license number and expiration date of your Registered Nurse license in the “Licenses or Certificates” section of your Application for Employment/Promotion. You must provide complete and accurate information. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.
If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your application. A new application and application supplement are required for a retest
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
