NATURE OF WORK

 

You will participate in a formal and on-the-job training program in air quality engineering under the responsible charge of a professional engineer.  You will participate in plan approvals, permitting, stack testing, ambient air monitoring, risk assessment and emissions monitoring.  Initially, you will observe and assist other engineers; and will perform simple, routine assignments under supervision.  As competence is acquired, assignments will be increased in difficulty and performed with more independence.

You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed.  Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements.

Condition of Employment

Certain positions in this job will require a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

 

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering; OR one year of engineering experience, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.

 

Clarification of Requirements

If you are attempting to qualify under the first option above, you may take the test if you have completed 90 or more credit hours and expect to receive a bachelor's degree within the next 7 months.  You must provide proof of your degree before you start work.

 

If your degree is not in engineering, you must submit a copy of your college transcript (see address in “How To Apply”).  Twenty-four credit hours in engineering, regardless of the major, are considered qualifying.

Air Quality Engineering Trainee positions are located in the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.  About 3 vacancies are filled each year.  Positions may exist at the following Central, District and Regional Offices:  Altoona (Blair County), Harrisburg (Dauphin County), Meadville (Crawford County), Norristown (Montgomery County), Pittsburgh (Allegheny County), Wilkes-Barre (Luzerne County), and Williamsport (Lycoming County).

TESTING

 

The test will be administered on a computer.  Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test.  A new application is required for a retest.
