NATURE OF WORK

Staff Psychiatrists are responsible for the care and treatment of patients with a mental health or co-occurring diagnosis.  You will provide these services to patients in wards, diagnostic centers, other similar facilities or community programs.  Examinations, diagnoses, treatment and other therapeutic functions are performed under the general direction of a higher level psychiatrist.

 

Psychiatrist Supervisors direct a segment of the total psychiatric services within a facility, such as admissions, forensic, children and adolescents, or out-patient activities.  Other duties include directing the treatment team, coordinating psychiatric care with other professional services, and contributing to policy development and interpretation.

 

Chiefs of Psychiatry have hospital-wide responsibility for all psychiatric services, including integration with other professional services, supervision of medical staff, direction of in-service training programs, and developing policies within the facility.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.  Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for these job titles.

 

Some of the positions in these job titles come under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.  If you are a final candidate for one of these positions, you will have to provide reports on your background from such sources as the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.  If you are a final candidate and not a Pennsylvania resident, you must also obtain a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  If your background is unacceptable, you will be disqualified for employment in such positions.  You will receive information about these requirements and how to obtain the required reports at the time you are being considered for employment.

 

Some of the positions in these job titles come under the provisions of the Older Adults Protective Services Act.  If you are a final candidate for one of these positions, you will have to obtain a report of criminal record information from the Pennsylvania State Police or a statement that the State Police Central Repository contains no information relating to you.  If you are a final candidate and not currently a Pennsylvania resident, or if you are currently a Pennsylvania resident and a final candidate but have not been a resident for two years prior to the date that you received notification that you are a final candidate, you are also required to furnish a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  If your background is unacceptable, you will be disqualified for employment in such positions.  You will receive information about this requirement and how to obtain the required reports at the time you are being considered for employment.

 

Necessary Special Requirements for All Job Titles

Possession of a license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as issued by the State Board of Medical Education and Licensure, or the State Board of Osteopathic Examiners.

 

Certain positions in children’s and adolescent facilities require completion of a residency program in child psychiatry which meets the certification requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.

 

Minimum Requirements

Training For All Titles - Completion of a residency or training program in psychiatry which meets the certification requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.

 

Experience

Staff Psychiatrist – None

 

Psychiatrist Supervisor – One year as a Staff Psychiatrist; OR one year of experience in psychiatry or child psychiatry.

 

Chief of Psychiatry – One year as a Psychiatrist Supervisor; OR two years of experience in psychiatry or child psychiatry, including one year in a supervisory, administrative, or consultative capacity.

Additional Compensation

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania offers substantial bonus payments as described below in addition to the regular salaries.

 

Board Certification Bonuses

Bonuses are paid to full-time and part-time medical and osteopathic physicians in all the specialties listed in the Commonwealth’s contract, in accordance with eligibility criteria established by the state.

 

Eligibility is limited to physicians whose regular duties are predominately within the specialty for which they are board certified, except for management-level employees, whose duties need not be within the board areas.  Payments are made annually. 

 

The amounts listed below are based on 12 months of service during a fiscal year.  Payments are prorated according to an employee’s length of compensable status.

 

Full-time employment - $5,600

Part-time employment (75%-99% of full-time) - $4,200

Part-time employment (50%-74% of full-time) - $2,800

 

Child or Forensic Psychiatry

Full-time employment - $10,000     

Part-time employment (75%-99% of full-time) - $7,500

Part-time employment (50%-74% of full-time) - $5,000

 

Quality Assurance Bonuses

Payments are made in accordance with eligibility criteria established by the state to recognize continued employment.  Payments are pro-rated for part-time physicians, who must be employed at least 50% of the full-time schedule to qualify.

Compensation is paid for hours worked outside regularly scheduled hours in response to emergencies and for hours spent “on call.”
