NATURE OF WORK

 

Surveyor 1 – You will plan, coordinate, direct and review the activities of survey corps engaged in surveying activities.  Duties include researching and compiling legal documents, establishing and setting survey procedures, collecting survey data, and setting and marking boundary lines; downloading, reducing and computing data to produce maps and drawings; writing property descriptions for deeds, leases, and other documents; and serving as an expert witness during court proceedings.

 

Surveyor 2 – You will organize, direct, plan and coordinate the strategic efforts of employees in a survey unit.  Duties include planning, organizing and directing surveying activities; consulting with engineering employees, right-of-way administrators, realtors, attorneys and the general public; providing for training of staff; participating in field investigations; attending meetings; providing for the relocation of public utility facilities; approving/disapproving survey cost estimates and invoices; and reviewing, sealing and signing survey plans.

You must be willing to travel.  Travel expenses will be paid.

 

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Necessary Special Requirement

Both Job Titles - Possession of a registered surveyor’s license as issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, or possession of a registered surveyor’s license obtained in another public jurisdiction under requirements which are at least equal to those of Pennsylvania.

 

Minimum Requirements

Surveyor 1 – One year as a Surveyor Technician Supervisor; OR 5 years of responsible surveying work, including 1 year as a chief of party of a wide variety of surveying assignments; and graduation from high school.  An Associate Degree in surveying or engineering technology may be substituted for 1 year or non-specialized experience; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Surveyor 2 - One year as a Surveyor 1; OR 7 years of responsible experience in a wide variety of surveying assignments, including 3 years in a supervisory capacity; and graduation from high school.  An Associate Degree in surveying or engineering technology may be substituted for 1 year of non-supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

Clarification of Requirements

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education.  Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

Surveyor 1 – There are currently 9 filled positions in the Pennsylvania Departments of General Services, Conservation and Natural Resources and the Game Commission.  These positions are located in Dauphin, Bedford, Venango, Luzerne, Berks, and Clearfield Counties.

 

Surveyor 2 – There are currently 10 filled positions in the Pennsylvania Departments of General Services, Transportation, and the Fish and Boat Commission.  These positions are located in Dauphin, Centre, Clearfield, Lycoming, Lackawanna, Blair, Indiana, Allegheny, and Fayette Counties.

TESTING

 

You will be rated on your experience and training.  Your score will be based on information you report on your application.

 

Since you only need to complete the Civil Service Application for Employment/Promotion for these job titles, you must provide complete and accurate information.  You must list your Pennsylvania Surveyor license number and expiration date in the “Licenses or Certificates” section of your Application for Employment/Promotion.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a disqualification.

 

If you are found ineligible, you may reapply when you meet the Necessary Special Requirements and Minimum Experience and Training requirements.  A new application is required for a retest.

 

TEST RESULTS

 

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
