NATURE OF WORK
Survey Technicians perform advanced technical work, using conventional and electronic surveying equipment, as a member of a survey corps. Work includes performing the activities required for measuring the existing field locations of natural and man-made features, the locations of property borders, the dimensions of land areas, and the precise positioning of points, lines and grades. Work is performed in rough or sometimes hazardous terrain in a variety of weather conditions. Work is reviewed by a technical supervisor for completeness, accuracy and adherence to established technical and performance standards.
Land Research Survey Technicians perform advanced technical work in land ownership research, as well as serving as a member of a survey corps performing the duties as listed above. Land research includes constructing title chains, examinations of wills and estates, constructing assessment histories, abstracting deeds and obtaining non-legal land office warrant information.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Necessary Special Requirement
12220 - Certain positions in this job will require possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
12271 - Possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license is required.
Minimum Requirements
Survey Technician - One year of experience as an Engineering Technician; OR three years of experience as a member of a survey corps which included duties operating both standard and electronic surveying instruments; OR one year of experience as a member of a survey corps which included duties operating both standard and electronic surveying instruments, and an associate's degree in surveying, drafting, design, civil or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.
Land Research Survey Technician - One year as an Engineering Technician involving technical land surveying experience including the research of land ownership and operation of both standard and electronic surveying instruments; OR three years of technical land surveying experience which included research of land ownership and operation of both standard electronic surveying instruments, and training or experience which affords a working knowledge of high school level algebra, plane geometry or trigonometry; OR any experience and training which affords the applicant the required knowledges, skills and abilities.
Clarification of Requirements
12271 only - You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

TESTING
The multiple-choice test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
This test is different from previous tests for these job titles. If you have taken the test before, you may get a different score on this test.
