NATURE OF WORK
You will work in one of the areas of transportation engineering, e.g., traffic control, materials and testing, construction and maintenance, and design. Duties may include recommending traffic signaling, speed limits or passing zones; investigating and analyzing unstable foundations or solid-rock slope failures; inspecting materials and workmanship at project sites for compliance with contract requirements and departmental standards; performing highway design studies; or preparing and/or reviewing preliminary designs. Typically, you will work on component parts of projects for which controlling parameters have been set, and perform this work under limited technical supervision.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
You must be of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job. Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for this job title.
Condition of Employment
Certain positions will require possession of a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements
Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program; OR one year of civil engineering experience in transportation, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; OR four years of civil engineering experience in transportation, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline; OR five years of civil engineering experience in transportation, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training.

You may substitute related education for the required experience or appropriate experience for the required education. Unrelated experience or education will not be accepted.

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after six months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for this job title and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
This test and scoring procedure are different from previous tests for this job title. If you have taken the test before, you may get a different score on this test.
