NATURE OF WORK

 

You will perform environmental engineering work in the field of air quality to protect the environment and public health and safety. 

 

Duties may include interpreting and applying procedures and guidelines in the review of plan approvals and operating permit applications for air contamination sources;  conducting field studies and surveys including stack testing, ambient air monitoring, risk assessment and emissions monitoring; inspecting the operation and maintenance of facilities; recommending action on permit applications; preparing and presenting technical reports; and developing regulations, guidelines, standards, and procedures for the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of sources of air quality output.

 

Similar work is assigned to both job levels but assignments at the Engineer level are more complex, have greater impact, and are accomplished with more independence to determine the scope and soundness of investigations and recommendations.

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Minimum Requirements

Air Quality Engineering Specialist - Successful completion of the training program for Air Quality Engineering Trainee; OR one year of professional experience in air quality engineering or environmental engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering; OR two years of professional experience in air quality engineering or environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR one year of professional experience in air quality engineering or environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.  Graduate study in chemical, mechanical, electrical or environmental engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

Air Quality Engineer - Two years as an Air Quality Engineering Specialist; OR three years of professional experience in air quality engineering or environmental engineering, and a bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering; OR four years of professional experience in air quality engineering or environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR three years of professional experience in air quality engineering or  environmental engineering, and possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.  Graduate study in chemical, mechanical, electrical or environmental engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
 
Conditions of Employment
For both job titles - Certain positions in this job will require possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
 
For Air Quality Engineer - Certain positions in this job will require possession of a valid Professional Engineer license issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.

TESTING

You will be rated on your experience and training.  Your score will be based on information you report on your application and application supplement.

 

You must provide complete and accurate information.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.

 

If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results."  A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.

 

TEST RESULTS

Employment and promotion lists will be established.  You will be notified in writing of your test results.
