NATURE OF WORK
You will evaluate and negotiate settlement of medical malpractice claims to protect the financial liability of the MCare Fund. This involves reviewing the progress of insurance investigators, claims examiners and attorneys of private medical malpractice insurance providers to assure the effective development of defense against claims exceeding their maximum liability limits. You will also independently develop claims defense where the Commonwealth carries total liability. Work also involves negotiating settlements of claims through claimants’ attorneys; estimating preliminary and final claim value; estimating insurance companies’ share of liability in cases involving multiple defendants; and preparing claims’ summaries, defense tactics and recommended maximum settlement offers.
Medical Malpractice Claims Supervisors assign, supervise and review the work of a technical staff engaged in evaluating and negotiating the settlement of medical malpractice claims.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
You will be tested before your qualifications are reviewed. Your test results will count only if you meet all job requirements. If after reading the requirements you are not sure you qualify, contact one of the Commission’s offices listed at the end of this announcement.
You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
Minimum Requirements
Medical Malpractice Claims Examiner 1
Three years of experience in examining or negotiating the settlement of medical malpractice claims and a bachelor’s degree; OR an advanced degree in law (juris doctorate).
Medical Malpractice Claims Examiner 2
One year as a Medical Malpractice Claims Examiner 1; OR 4 years of experience in examining or negotiating the settlement of medical malpractice claims and a bachelor’s degree; OR 1 year of experience in examining or negotiating the settlement of medical malpractice claims and an advanced degree in law (juris doctorate).
Medical Malpractice Claims Supervisor
One year as a Medical Malpractice Claims Examiner 2; OR 5 years of experience in examining or negotiating the settlement of medical malpractice claims and a bachelor’s degree; OR 2 years of experience in examining or negotiating the settlement of medical malpractice claims and an advanced degree in law (juris doctorate).

TESTING
The test will be administered on a computer. Information about computerized testing is available online at www.scsc.state.pa.us OR in paper form at any State Civil Service Commission office.

The test will be administered in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh State Civil Service Commission offices, Monday through Friday.
The test will also be held approximately 10 days a month at additional test centers located in Allentown, Erie, Johnstown, Lock Haven, and Scranton. If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your test. You must submit a new application to be retested.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
