NATURE OF WORK

 

Physicians for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are employed by agencies listed in the Job Opportunities section of this announcement, in various types of facilities throughout the state on either a part-time or full-time basis.

 

Staff, Supervisory, and Management Physicians perform non-specialist medical work of a staff, supervisory, or administrative nature in the general care and treatment of persons who are physically ill and/or intellectually disabled.  Levels of work are distinguished from one another by the degree of complexity, responsibility and supervision required.

 

Physician Specialists in Internal Medicine diagnose, care and treat patients in a state facility, clinic or community program.

 

State Police Medical Officers examine and evaluate the medical condition of Pennsylvania State Police employment candidates and current employees to determine possession of fitness for duty requirements.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

You must be of good moral character and able to perform the essential functions of the job.  Pennsylvania residency is currently waived for these job titles.

 

If you are a final candidate for a position covered by the Child Protective Services Law, you will have to provide reports on your background, at your own expense, from such sources as the Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.  If you are not a Pennsylvania resident, you must also obtain a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information, at your own expense, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

 

If you are a final candidate for a position covered by the Older Adults Protective Service Act, you will have to obtain a report of criminal record information, at your own expense, from the Pennsylvania State Police or a statement that the State Police Central Repository contains no information relating to you.  If you are not currently a Pennsylvania resident, or if you are currently a Pennsylvania resident and have not been a resident for two years prior to the date that you received notification that you are a final candidate, you are also required to furnish a report of Federal Criminal History Record Information, at your own expense, from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

 

For positions with the Pennsylvania Departments of Military and Veterans Affairs and Public Welfare:  After you receive a conditional offer of employment, you must undergo a medical examination.

 

Necessary Special Requirements

All Job Titles – Possession of a current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

 

Additional Necessary Special Requirement for Staff Physician, MR; Physician Specialist in Internal Medicine; Supervisory Physician; Management Physician 2; and State Police Medical Officer – Possession of a current certificate from the United States Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe medication.

 

Post Employment Requirement for State Police Medical Officer

Possession of a current Federal Aviation Administration certification as an Aviation Medical Examiner within one year of appointment.

 

Minimum Requirements

Staff Physician, MR – Completion of an approved U.S. residency training program in the allopathic medical specialties of family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine or certification in the osteopathic field of general practice; AND successful completion of 50 hours of continuing medical education approved by the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association, as appropriate, in the previous 12 months; AND three years of post-residency experience in the practice of medicine.  Within the past three years, one full year must have involved a direct primary caseload.

 

Staff Physician 1 – You must show possession of the Necessary Special Requirement.  Please provide the number and expiration date of your Pennsylvania Medical License in the “Licenses/Certificates” section of your application.

 

Staff Physician 2 – Three years of experience and/or training in the practice of medicine.

 

Physician Specialist in Internal Medicine – Completion of an approved U.S. residency training program in the allopathic medical specialty of internal medicine; AND successful completion of 50 hours of continuing medical education approved by the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association in the previous 12 months; AND three years of post-residency experience in the practice of internal medicine; AND Board Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. 

 

Supervisory Physician – One year of experience as a Staff Physician 2 or as a Physician Specialist in Internal Medicine; OR completion of an approved U.S. residency training program in the allopathic medical specialty of family practice, general practice, internal medicine or occupational medicine; AND successful completion of 50 hours of continuing medical education approved by the American Medical Association or the American Osteopathic Association in the previous 12 months; AND four years of post-residency experience in the practice of medicine, of which one of the last three years must have included one full year in an administrative, consultative or supervisory capacity over physicians assigned a direct primary care caseload, supplemented by successful completion of 75 hours of post graduate education or training in health services administration or related management topics within the last five years; AND Board Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Medical Specialists Board of Family Practice, General Practice, Internal Medicine or Occupational Medicine.

 

Management Physician 1 - You must show possession of the Necessary Special Requirement.  Please provide the number and expiration date of your Pennsylvania Medical License in the “Licenses/Certificates” section of your application.

You will be rated on your experience and training.  Scores for Staff Physician 1 (37310) and Management Physician 1 (37860) will be based on information you provide on the application.  Scores for all remaining job titles will be based on information you provide on the application and application supplement.

 

You must provide complete and accurate information.  Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application or disqualification.

 

If, after receiving your test results, you wish to be considered for vacancies in additional physician job titles you will be required to submit a new application and application supplement. 

 

If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
