NATURE OF WORK
Geologic Scientists, DCNR participate in studies, investigations, preparation of reports, specialized mapping assignments, and dissemination of information regarding Pennsylvania geologic resources such as groundwater, energy, minerals, geologic hazards, or other aspects of geology or landscapes.
You will assist senior scientists in gathering, analyzing, and interpreting geologic data to determine mineralogy and petrology, and create geologic maps or reports associated with the quality and quantity of groundwater and its glow paths, coal, coal bed methane, natural gas, and petroleum bearing rock; minerals; sink holes and landslides; and naturally occurring elements.
Senior Geologic Scientists, DCNR perform work as described above at higher technical levels, are responsible for complete studies and investigations, and may serve as project leaders.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

You must be a Pennsylvania resident, of good moral character, and able to perform the essential functions of the job.
For some jobs, offers of employment will be made only if you are willing to travel. Travel expenses will be paid.
Necessary Special Requirement - For Both Job Titles
You must have a valid driver’s license.
Minimum Requirements
Geologic Scientist, DCNR - One year as a Geologic Trainee; OR possession of a license as a professional geologist issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR two years of experience in professional geologic work, and a bachelor’s degree in geology.
Senior Geologic Scientist, DCNR - Two years as a Geologic Scientist, DCNR; OR possession of a license as a professional geologist issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; OR three years of professional geologic work and a bachelor’s degree in geology.
Clarification of Requirements - For Both Job Titles
Graduate study in the field of geology may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Geologic Scientists are employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). There are 5 Geologic Scientist positions, and 13 Senior Geologic Scientist positions in DCNR. Typically, there are 1-2 positions filled each year.

TESTING
You will be rated on your experience and training. Your score will be based on information you report on your application and application supplement.
You must provide complete and accurate information. Failure to do so may delay the processing of your application, or result in a lower-than-deserved score or disqualification.
If you take the test and want to take it again, you may be retested after 6 months from the date of your "Notice of Examination Results." A new application and application supplement are required for a retest.
If your name is on an eligible list for these job titles and you take this test, your most recent examination result will be the only one counted.
TEST RESULTS
Employment and promotion lists will be established. You will be notified in writing of your test results.
These lists will replace any previous lists.
Although this test is similar to the previous test, the scoring procedure is different for these job titles. If you have taken the test before, you may receive a different score on this test.
