In an effort to support the work of the Governor's Cabinet for Children and Families, Governor Rendell announced the creation of the Governor's Commission for Children and Families in April 2004. The statewide Commission is chaired by Shelly Yanoff, executive director of Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth, and is organized under six regional chairs.
Governor Rendell established the Governor's Cabinet for Children and Families by executive order in September 2003 to coordinate and streamline services for children and families among the many government agencies across the state.
The Commission is comprised of stakeholders from across Pennsylvania, including parents, family members, and advocates. The stakeholders will be identifying policy, program, and systemic barriers that prevent state and local governments from effectively and efficiently serving the needs of children and families, and recommending solutions to the Children's Cabinet to address the problems.
The advisory Commission regional chairs will be convening forums in six regions across Pennsylvania to discuss various areas, such as identifying barriers to accessing services and possible solutions, and convening regional budget forums to discuss the Governor's proposed budget and its impact on children and families.
